Burping Techniques

A Burp, like a belch, is letting out gas through the mouth. Bottle fed babies tend to have more gas than those only on breast feed. You must have seen mothers patting a child on back after feeding. That is burping.

You may have to burp your baby 1 – 2 times during the feed and once after. A breast-fed baby can be burped after each feed.

You can burp your baby by placing him on your lap on his tummy and patting or rubbing his back. This works best for newborns. When he is older you can hold him upright with his head resting on your shoulder and pat his back gently. Some babies burp best when held in a sitting position with head and back supported.

Remember your baby may bring out some milk while burping. This is harmless.
